Blogs for All

Blogs are a way for anyone to take on the role of reporter and publisher of the news and how they interpret it.  Whether this news is about things they are interested in or hobbies that they want to share with others.  It is your own unique outlook on the world around you.  There are many features on blog that allow you to not only share this new with others but also read other blogs, comment on other blogs, and link blogs together.  The power of media is at your fingertips.  As an educator our goal is to keep our students engaged and excited about learning.  By teacher our students to blog and allowing them to do so in the classroom, we will be encouraging empowerment, interaction, motivation, participation, creativity, reflection, we will be extending the walls of our classroom to the world wide web.  The students will have access to the Internet 24/7 is they desire.  Some educational blog sites I found and bookmarked for my own personal use are:  edublogs.org, www.blogtopsites.com/tag/education, and www.schoolrack.com.  Blogging allows for children to participate in intercultural exchanges because there is no limit to who they interact with and gives them the opportunity to learn first hand from people of other cultures.

  1. I have to say that I am against young children using blogs or any other social media site i.e. Facebook. I feel that adults get themselves into trouble and the understand what they are doing for the most part, however children do not have enough life lessons to understand that somethings just should not be put out on the internet. I understand that they have to learn and I do feel that the teacher and parents should teach the children together how to use these tools. I have strong feelings about letting children period be apart of having their own blog or Facebook I realize that many people do not share this opinion. I do think that the teacher and parents being facilitators of the blog is the best answer. I think that we have to remember that all homes are not equipped with computers and/or internet.

  2. I feel the quite opposite to Lisa's comment. Although I do see her point on how much Facebook and other social media can get our children into trouble, I feel that if it is used strictly in an educational purpose, this can be monitored and used correctly. If I were the teacher I would use blogging in my English class as part of their creative writing. As the teacher I would try and make sure that they were using blogging the correct way. I agree with you when you said that it is part of our job as educators to excite our students with learning and I really believe that blogging could serve that purpose.
